CHAPTER SEVEN

From Failure To Success in Seconds

HOW CULTIVATING CONTEXT AWARENESS CAN CREATE AN INNER STATE OF SUCCESS

“THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS WITHIN” IS A COMMON MESSAGE SHARED BY MANY SPIRITUAL TEACHERS. If given the choice, I believe anyone would choose heaven over hell any day. However, the big question is how?

My own explorations into finding nirvana within this lifetime have included meditating day and night for ten weeks on the island of Patmos, followed by a further fourteen weeks in the mountains of Mexico, and more meditation retreats since then. During these extended periods of meditation and of course during my daily meditation routine, I’ve discovered that the content-context model shared in the previous chapter can offer a roadmap for finding freedom from problems and enjoying what can best be described as heaven on earth. So let’s continue the exploration by diving further into the context of … everything!

In the previous chapter we discovered that content - stuff, sound and movement - exists within a context of still, silence space. And by putting your attention on the context you can think less by discovering the peace that is always present. But the benefit of exploring the context of your mind doesn’t end there. In fact, it is only the beginning!

CONTENT CONTEXT

Stuff Space

Sounds Silence

Movement Stillness

Let’s continue by considering this: On which side would you say the mind actually exists - the content or context side? When I ask audiences this question, it is common for people to assume that the mind is the context; however, this is not so. To encourage a fresh perspective, I often go on to ask: How do you know you have a mind? After a pause, the answer I usually get is something like: ‘Because I’m aware of it’. So by that rationale, the mind is the content, whereas the context of the mind is your conscious awareness.

Your mind may not feel the content, but that doesn’t stop it being the content.

Without awareness there would be nothing to be aware of the mind. Or, said differently, you would have no way of knowing what your thoughts were if it was not for the conscious awareness that was aware of them. Obvious thing to say, perhaps, but it is fundamental when learning how to think less.

CONTENT CONTEXT

Mind Awareness

Most people are fixated on the content of the thinking mind because they have forgotten that thoughts exist within the context of awareness. They have become so focused on the content of their mind that they leave little, if any, attention to notice the awareness that is aware of their mind. They are focused on the birds so much that they miss the sky. In doing so, they become so lost in thoughts that they end up missing the divine presence of still silent peace that all of their thoughts exist within.

Have you ever noticed that you still exist even when you are not having any thoughts?
